The Betrayal by Technology: A Portrait of Jacques Ellul (1992)

Jacques Ellul was a French theologian/sociologist and anarchist. He first became well-known to American readers when his book The Technological Society was published in English in 1964.

This book leveled a broad critique of technique, a term that means more than gadgets and machines – as the English word technology means.

For Ellul, technique represented an entire way of life characterized by life fragmented so that efficiency ultimately rules over all ethical decisions.

Ellul warned that technique was having drastic effects on all aspects of modern life. His books, Anarchy and Christianity, The Politics of God and the Politics of Man are two examples of how his political and religious outlooks mutually reinforced one another.

Many Green Anarchists have cited Ellul’s work on technique as influential on their thought.

Pregled razprav o UTD v zadnjem obdobju razkriva zelo različne poglede na vprašanja racionalnega in poštenega sodobnega vodenja gospodarstva in družbe, na vprašanja mednarodne konkurenčnosti države, na odnose med “ustvarjalci” in “potrošniki” ustvarjene vrednosti. Ne potekajo pa take razprave samo v Sloveniji.

In Debt We Trust (2006)

La Commune (2000)

»La Commune« (Pariška komuna) iz leta 2000 je narejen v soavtorstvu in v spontani improvizaciji ekipe, katere del so aktivistke in aktivisti družbenih gibanj. V filmu Watkins uporabi medijsko reprezentacijo resničnih dogodkov in jo postavi nasproti igralcem – »avtentičnim naturščkom«, ki pripovedujejo, razlagajo, dopovedujejo, spodbijajo, dodajajo, sugerirajo, usmerjajo komuno itd. Tako kot skozi svoj celotni opus tudi v tem filmu opominja, da je moč zgodovino v resnici uprizoriti le kot dialektično igro, prisvajanje in hkratno oddaljevanje, ironijo in radikalno kritiko njenih lastnih predpostavk.  Watkinsa, ki preiskuje usodo pariške komune skozi neposredno sporočanje samih akterjev dogodkov, zanima nasprotje med nujnostjo egalitarne revolucije na eni strani in nepremostljivimi težavami njenega vzdrževanja v velikih skupnosti na drugi. Nasprotje med demokracijo kot orodjem vladanja ljudi in prisilo, potrebno za kolektivno delovanje masovnih družb se zdi nepomirljivo.

Corporations In The Classroom (2007)

Če še kdo verjame, da so šole namenjene samo učenju in vzgoji družbene odgovornosti, ga bo gotovo zamajalo sporočilo kanadskega dokumentarnega filma »Korporacije v razredu« (CORPORATIONS IN THE CLASSROOM). Režiserka Jill Sharpe pripoveduje zgodbo o tem, kako otroci danes pred oglaševanjem korporacij niso več varni niti v šolah. Zaradi vse večjih omejitev javnega financiranja šolstva, se morajo učitelji in šolski administratorji za to, da na izobraževalnem trgu v Ameriki preživijo, znajti kako drugače. Čeprav se temu upirajo, pa je situacija idealna za »Trojanskega konja« kot mu pravijo, ki čaka pred vrati v obliki korporativnega oglaševanja. Oglaševanje v šolskih letih komercialnim znamkam omogoča dostop do otrokove pozornosti tudi v kasnejšem življenju, ko postane tudi sam potrošnik. Način, na katerega korporacije vstopajo v šolo z raznimi promocijami, sponzorstvi in celo posebnimi učnimi urami, kaže, da tega rastočega trenda ne bo moč kmalu ustaviti. Problem je tudi v tem, da je na tem področju zelo malo ali skoraj nič pravnih omejitev, ki bi otroke varovale pred korporacijami in njihovim oglaševanjem. Šole pa, če želijo učencem nuditi primerne pogoje šolanja, potrebujejo igrišča, športne dvorane in druga orodja, ki jih denar davkoplačevalcev ne zmore več priskrbeti. Postopek uvajanja oglaševanja namenjenega otrokom, se v takih pogojih torej zdi več kot idealen. Najprej se začne s sponzoriranjem raznih prireditev, potem si korporacije zagotovijo pravice do poimenovanj in nato še do učnih pripomočkov v razredih, kot je recimo televizija, za kar morajo potem šole del pouka nameniti spremljanju njihovih oglasnih sporočil.
